CHEYENNE – The City of Cheyenne’s annual four-legged temporary employees are back in town, and residents can get a glimpse of these workers in action over the next couple weeks. Around 300 goats are working to help maintain vegetation overgrowth along a section of Crow Creek near the Ames Avenue underpass. The team is split into two halves – one on the west side of the underpass, and one on the east. The herd is visible from the Greenway along Crow Creek and is kept enclosed by a temporary electric fence. Sam Berta, a staff engineer in the City’s Engineering Department, said the goats help keep vegetation under control along the creek and are more cost-effective than using manual labor, heavy equipment or chemicals. The City has used goats for several years in Crow Creek and Dry Creek to help keep those waterways clear and safe for proper drainage. This year’s contractor is Green Goat, and the goats will be working until June 26.
